Noticing that somebody may be struggling can feel worrying. You do not have to fix everything. Starting a conversation, listening without judgement and helping them find support can make a meaningful difference.
01
Choose a quiet moment and tell them what you have noticed. Be direct, gentle and give them time to answer.
"I've noticed you haven't seemed yourself lately. How are you really doing?"
02
Let them speak in their own time. Take what they say seriously, avoid judgement and ask what would feel helpful right now.
"You do not have to deal with this alone. I'm here to listen."
03
Offer practical support. You could look through the services on this page together, help them contact their GP or stay with them while they make a call.
"Would you like us to find some support together?"
Ask them clearly and calmly if they are thinking about suicide. Asking directly will not put the idea into their head. Listen carefully and take what they tell you seriously.
If they have harmed themselves, may act on suicidal thoughts or are in immediate danger, call 999 or help them get to A&E. Stay with them if it is safe for you to do so.
VIEW URGENT SUPPORTSupporting somebody can affect you too. Set boundaries, share the responsibility where possible and make space for your own wellbeing.
