Rob Sillito: How Running Changed More Than Just Fitness

Starting running can feel intimidating. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone thinking about getting back into it, the biggest barrier is often just taking that first step.
This First Miles story is a reminder that running isn’t about being fit before you start, it’s about starting, and letting everything else follow.
Why I Started Running
I started running in 2022 to raise money for Parkinson’s UK. At the time, it was about having a purpose, something bigger than myself to work towards.
Now, it’s become something more personal.
I run for my health, both physically and mentally. Movement is one of the most powerful tools we have, and running has become a way to clear my head, build resilience, and feel better day to day.
What Running Gave Me That I Didn’t Expect
One of the biggest surprises wasn’t physical, it was the people.
Running has a way of bringing people together. Whether it’s at events, local runs, or just being part of the wider running community, you end up meeting people you never would have otherwise.
Over time, those people become friends. And that sense of community is something that makes running easier to keep coming back to.
What I Wish I Knew Before I Started Running
I wish I had started earlier.
It’s simple, but it’s true.
There’s often this idea that you need to wait until you’re “ready” to start running, fitter, more confident, more capable. But the reality is, you become those things by starting.
Advice for Anyone Scared to Start Running
If you’re scared to start running, you’re not alone.
Running has a reputation that you need to already be fit, fast, or experienced before you begin. That’s not true.
The hardest part is taking that first step.
Once you do, everything else becomes easier to figure out, your pace, your routine, your confidence. None of that needs to be perfect from day one.
Starting Your Running Journey
Running isn’t about perfection. It’s not about pace, distance, or how you look.
It’s about showing up.
Whether you’re starting for your mental health, physical fitness, or a personal challenge, your First Miles matter. And they’re enough, exactly as they are.
Ready to Start Running?
If you’ve been thinking about it, this is your sign.
Start small. Go at your own pace. Don’t wait until you feel ready, just begin.
