Lowie: Just Start and Keep It Simple
Sometimes running starts with inspiration from the people closest to you.
For Lowie, it was seeing a lifelong love of running through family that encouraged a return to the sport after years away. What started with a parkrun quickly became something that improved both physical and mental wellbeing in ways that were impossible to ignore.
Why I Started Running
I was inspired by my dad, who has always been a runner.
I used to run when I was younger too, but after going to a parkrun with my mum and dad last year, I decided I wanted to get back into it properly.
Being in that environment again reminded me how much I enjoyed running and made me want to challenge myself.
The Mental Health Benefits of Running
The biggest thing that surprised me about running was the effect it has on your mental health.
Even on the difficult runs, you always feel better afterwards.
There is something powerful about showing up consistently each week, getting outside, and making time for yourself. Over time, that consistency starts to impact every part of your life, not just physically but mentally too.
Running became something that helped clear my head, improve my mood, and make everyday life feel easier to manage.
What I Wish I Knew Before Starting
One thing I wish I had known before getting back into running is how important proper trainers and warming up really are.
Good running shoes make such a difference, especially when you are building consistency. And taking a few minutes to warm up properly helps your body feel stronger and more prepared before every run.
Advice for Beginner Runners
If you are thinking about starting to run, begin with something simple like Couch to 5K.
It is a brilliant way to ease yourself into running and gives you support and structure as a beginner without making things feel overwhelming.
The most important thing is not how fast you go or how far you run. It is simply getting started and building confidence one run at a time.
Starting Your Running Journey
Running does not have to begin with huge goals or perfect plans.
Sometimes it starts with one parkrun, one decision, or simply wanting to feel better.
Your First Miles do not need to look impressive to matter. They just need to happen.
