David Quinn: From First 5K to Falling in Love With Running

Starting running doesn’t always come from experience. Sometimes it starts with a reason, something personal that pushes you to take that first step.

This First Miles story is about turning challenge into purpose, and discovering that running can become much more than you ever expected.

Why I Started Running

I set myself a challenge to raise money for a local cancer centre in Cardiff after a close friend passed away.

I signed up for my first 5K race as a fundraiser, having never really run before outside of playing football. The goal was simple. Finish it, or maybe complete it in under an hour.

To prepare, I started going to parkruns.

Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with running.

What Running Gave Me

Running quickly became more than just training for a race.

You don’t need anything except yourself and the outdoors. It’s one of the best forms of therapy, especially on the days when you’re struggling or need space to clear your head.

There’s something powerful about getting out, moving your body, and leaving it all on the pavement.

And one of the biggest surprises is the running community. It’s far more supportive than you expect, and that makes a huge difference when you’re just starting out.

You Don’t Need Everything to Start Running

It’s easy to feel like you need all the latest gear, expensive trainers, watches, and everything social media tells you is essential.

You don’t.

You just need yourself and a pair of sturdy trainers.

You don’t need to sign up for a marathon on day one either. Start small. Go to your local parkrun, enjoy it, and build from there.

Because at the end of the day, the only real competition is with yourself.

Advice for Beginner Runners

Get out there and do it, you won’t regret it.

Start small with something like a Couch to 5K plan and make it as comfortable as possible while you build your fitness. From there, the possibilities open up.

Be proud of every single run.

And most importantly… if it’s not on Strava, it doesn’t count.

Starting Your Running Journey

Running isn’t about pace, distance, or perfection.

It’s about starting.

Whether you’re running for a cause, your mental health, or a personal challenge, your First Miles matter and they can lead to something much bigger than you expect.
