Courtney: Starting Before You Believe You Can
Starting running can feel intimidating, especially when you spend more time thinking about whether you can do it than actually believing you can.
For a lot of people, the hardest part is not the running itself. It is getting past the fear in your own head and taking that first step.
This First Miles story is about starting for both physical and mental health, building confidence over time, and realising you are capable of far more than you think.
Why I Started Running
I started running to lose weight and help with my mental health.
At first, I never really saw myself as someone who could run. It felt difficult before I had even started, and I honestly did not think I would be able to progress with it.
But eventually I decided to give it a go anyway.
What started as a small step towards improving my health slowly became something I genuinely enjoyed and wanted to keep doing.
Realising I Could Actually Do It
The thing that surprised me the most about running was the fact I was actually able to do it.
Never in a million years did I think I would make progress or stick with it, but every run slowly started building confidence. Things that once felt impossible became manageable, and over time, running started to feel natural.
That is one of the biggest things running teaches you. Progress happens slowly, but it does happen.
The Running Community Is Different Than You Expect
One thing I really wish I had known before starting is how supportive the running community is.
When you are new to running, it is easy to assume everyone is faster, fitter, and more experienced than you. But the reality is that most runners just want to encourage other people to keep going.
No matter your pace, ability, or body size, there are people who will support you and make you feel welcome.
That makes such a difference when you are first starting out.
The Biggest Fear Is Usually in Your Own Head
If you are scared to start running, you are not alone.
The biggest fear is usually the one you create in your own mind. Fear of failing, fear of being judged, or fear of not being good enough can stop people before they even begin.
But once you get past that fear, you realise you can do it.
You do not need to be perfect. You just need to start.
Advice for Anyone Thinking About Starting
Just get out there and start. You will not regret it.
You do not need to be fast, experienced, or confident before you begin. Every runner starts somewhere, and every single run counts.
The hardest step is always the first one.
Starting Your Running Journey
Running is not about being perfect.
It is about showing up for yourself, even on the difficult days.
Whether you are starting for your mental health, your fitness, or simply to challenge yourself, your First Miles matter.
